Efficiency:

Efficiency is a major factor that most people don’t think about when they first buy a portable sawmill. The more you use the portable sawmill, the faster you’ll get. There are certain things that will maximize that efficiency.

For example, you may want to hire one or more people to work either with you or for you. The sawing process will be much faster with two people working at once. Another thing that you will learn with experience is where to position the logs that need to be sawn and where to place the lumber that is finished being cut. What To Expect When You Start:

This will depend on a number of things, including the type of portable sawmill you use and how many people you have working at once. Another factor will be how many hours you spend sawing wood in a given day.

For this example, let’s assume that you are using the AC 3651D portable sawmill. Let’s also assume that you have one employee helping you. If that’s the case, a good expectation would be that you might cut 2,500 bd. ft. in an eight hour day cutting 1″ lumber in 20″ to 30″ diameter logs. That’s assuming that the logs are right near the mill and a vast majority of your time isn’t spent hauling them from somewhere else.

Depending on what area of the country you are in, you can expect to make at least $150.00 per thousand board feet for 2″ boards and $175.00 per thousand board feet for 1″ boards. Keep in mind that those numbers are a worst case scenario. You might make more. However, at those rates, here are some figures to think about.

2,500 ft. a day at $150.00 per thousand = $375.00 per day income

10 gallons of fuel at $2.50 per gal. = $25.00 expense

Blade expense at 1.5 cents per bd. ft. = $37.50 expense

One additional mans labor = $100.00 expense

Gross Income = $375.00

Total Expense = $162.50

Net Profit for one days work = $212.50 in your pocket
